People came from all over Australia and, indeed, the world, to try to find gold. Men downed the tools of their trade and walked away from their jobs, their businesses and their farms, all because of the lure of gold. New towns sprang up overnight as people moved in with their tents and set up claims. Enterprising businessmen saw that more fortune was to be gained from charging inflated prices for supplies on the goldfields, so they set up shops in these new towns, where they had a monopoly on the sale of goods.
