The red and white colors of the Maple Leaf flag were retained from the English and Dominion flags, and is typical of many flags worldwide.

In 1921, King George V proclaimed the official colors of Canada as red, from Saint George's Cross, and white, from the French royal emblem since King Charles VII. On November 21, 1921, he also establshed the maple leaf as Canada's official emblem.

The Maple Leaf flag, however, only replaced the red Canadian ensign in 1965, after a 1963 proposal by prime minister Lester Pearson sparked contentious debate. A special bipartisan committee selected the flag design by George Stanley in 1964. It was chosen over a design with blue bars instead of red, symbolizing Canada's two (actually three) oceans. The Canadian Parliament approved the new flag and it was endorsed by Queen Elizabeth. The inaugural use (February 15, 1965) is celebrated as Flag Day in Canada.
