The primary form of business communication in the 1970's was the telephone. There were no fax machines and very few computer networks available to anything other than big universities and military systems.
The primary data communication was via a device called a TELEX machine. Which used speical TELEX lines to talk to each other on. The tones were then converted into text and printed on a Golf ball typewriter. At the same time punched tape was created in 5 bit binary which could be read through a Telex machine to reprint the messages again.
