Cable broadband internet is all the rage but not all homeowners have access to cable service. One of the most popular alternatives to cable is DSL service. DSL, which stands for digital subscriber line, is Internet connectivity provided through a high-speed telephone line, which is usually more than 10 times faster than traditional dial-up. But DSL is not without its disadvantages.

One of the biggest drawbacks to DSL service is that signal strength weakens considerably the farther the client is from the provider's base. This isn't the case with satellite service, which is usually another option for those that cannot get cable Internet service. When companies advertise speed, they're generally advertising the best-case scenario. Most DSL users will only get some portion of that.

However, DSL service still has some advantages over satellite Internet service that makes it a better choice. DSL service is typically considerably cheaper. DSL services, on the other hand, want to compete with the cable providers more directly, so it's realistic to purchase an "unlimited" plan at reasonable rates.

Another big issue with satellite is the upload aspect. Upload is quite limited both in terms of speed and the amount of data transfer allowed. This is especially becoming an issue today as the Internet becomes more resource intensive. Today's clients are transmitting more information than ever for video chats and a host of other services. Satellite can diminish the user experience while DSL service does not.

Consumers who have access to DSL service will also have access to a traditional dial-up connection, which will be far less expensive. However, dial-up is unreliable, requires a second phone line if you want use of the phone while on the Internet, and is barely fast enough to support the popular services on the Internet today. Over the next decade, dial-up services will all but fade away.

There's a good reason why cable broadband is the most popular kind of Internet service; it's the best balance of price and performance. But when that's not an option, DSL service provides a fair alternative that has several advantages over satellite and dial-up. And DSL service is not at risk of becoming outdated in the near future.
