A serial cable used to attach to a piece of computer equipment that does not have normal input and outputs e.g. keyboard and monitor. You use another computer to attach to the first via the serial port and cable and use a communications program to use the first computer's operating system. Medium to upper level Cisco and HP routers all have a console port for serial access.

Many routers, incuding all cisco products, use a special cable to carry a terminal session between the serial port of a connected computer and the "console" port of the router (looks like an RJ45 but is wired differently). Cisco includes a custom cable with every router... it is almost alway a flat blue cable with a db9 on one end and an rj45 male on the other. Internally it is a "rollover". Pin 9 goes to 1, 8 goes to 2, 7 goes to 3... etc. Once connected you use a terminal emulator like putty.exe or terraterm.exe to open the session.
