yes, but only to an extent, as newer technologies become available, outdated items wont be of much use, ex) I can upgrade my own computer I built with the latest CPU, but if another CPU comes out in the future, it might require a more powerful motherboard which would be in a sense, "changing" the "present" computer to a "future computer"

Installing an operating system Computer operating systems can be upgraded easily. Just go to a computer shop (e.g. Tesco, Argos, Curry's or PC World) and buy a disk for the operating system you want. (Many versions of the GNU/Linux operating system (Ubuntu, Mandriva, Slackware, Fedora, Debian, etc.) are free and can be downloaded from their respective websites.)

Put the disk into your computer and run it. In the recent versions of windows it will probably run automatically. Follow the on-screen prompts and the operating system will be installed.

Installing more computer hardware

Installing more computer hardware is quite easy. Just buy the hardware, but make sure you check it is compatible with the rest of your system, especially if you are changing your motherboard, memory or CPU.

Open the casing of your computer (usually the back or side panel), making sure you have earthed yourself so no static damages the components.

If you are installing a disk drive, you will need to punch out a sheet of metal from in front of the drive bay. After this, just slide the disk drive in to the bay and plug in.
