Three business communication situations in which a technology channel would be inappropriate for exchanging information are:

  1. When understanding of a reaction to the information being presented is needed, face-to-face communication is preferred. This provides the opportunity to read body language and tone of voice.
  2. For preventing and resolving conflicts, face-to-face communication is preferred. Again, body language and tone of voice can be read this way. Also, miscommunication is more easily avoidable.
  3. If someone is being laid-off or another change in responsibilities is being made, the employee should be told face-to-face.
