To take a good display picture, then u have to consider all the above. Usually most good display pictures are the ones taken spontaneously someplace, and not pre-planned or fixed ahead of time.

Settings tell alot about you in your display picture. for this reason, people usually display pictures while clubbing with friends to convey they are outgoing. others take pix with their families, they are into family life etc. 1st of all, choose a setting that matches ur personality and ur age. (ex: at a club for teenagers...) Different personalities choose different colors for the backgrounds... Make sure u dont wear the same color as the background, u do not want to be part of it. and also make sure to wear smthg that matches the background and protrudes you from it and ensures you're the center of attention in the picture. Backgrounds can be distracting sometimes if they are too crowded or that have objects that seem more colorful than you.

The companionship is also important. Simply, popular people usually have their display pictures include other people of the opposite sex (Ex: a girl with her boyfriend). this surely infers they have no problems with such social domains, they interact well with people of the opposite side and maybe it directly shows they are not available at the moment... Other people may usually have pix taken in groups, it tells you're a more of a "group" person, and 1 to 1 relations arent your best status. But make sure the group is not of 1 gender only, you do not want to be the loser with no friends of the opposite sex, especially for men. (for girls, it is not as bad)

However, pix with other people are really significant if u want to make good 1st impressions on the internet.

For your displays, be well-dressed.. but not TOO prepared. excessive make-up, photoshop, editing etc... show insecurity. Be sure to be well-dressed but within limits to show that you actually have no problem with being who you are: neat, tidy, and elegant... Slight editing however is not a problem, as long as it doesnt change how you look. make sure that how you look in real life should be displayed in ur picture, or else people who may seem interested (based on ur pic) will lose interest when/if they meet you.

The attitude in the display (laughing, frowning, no reaction, smiling etc) is very crucial. Best pictures are of course when people are laughing or smiling with other people. Make sure the smiles seem real (all the muscles of the face, including those near the eyes are lifted) and not fake or else it will directly show. People usually respond positively to display pictures with people showing their teeth, especially if they have a nice smile and proper white teeth. nonetheless, it always works for anyone. In addition, smiling shows you have had a great time taking the pix and you enjoy what you do (make sure the smile looks real..very important ) and it also shows the picture was shot spontaneously. Frowning people must have insecurities about their smiles and probably the region around the eye too... or their whole face) people with no reaction definitely seem they worked a lot to shoot the picture. Models usually show no reaction, but models also work a lot for their pictures and they always look fake and commercial.

Finally, your position must be taken into consideration. Sitting with a little bit of leaning frontward is good. Leaning back totally depends on how you display yourself in the picture... sometimes leaning back shows laziness... while for others, leaning back suits them and shows comfort and confidence. Do not lean too much frontward or else your face will look too big (in proportion to your body). Shooting a picture while standing with someone also is not a bad idea if the above is considered, as long as you stand straight , shoulders up (inhale before shooting the picture is a good idea for that) . The neck and chin are best when they are slightly lifted. Drawing them too close to the body shows u have a double-chin etc. and lifting them too far may illustrate u as a show-off (it is a good idea to lift ur chin if ur picture is for military purposes (check out hitler, stalin, etc pix for examples)
