When you are done with the document you should see in the upper tool box the letters ABC with a check mark by it. This is called the "Spell Check". Click on that and it will prompt you as to what you need to do. If you need to do a spell check on a specific word and not the whole document, then you can highlight the word in question and hit the spell check.

Word has an Autocorrect facility which will change some common errors automatically. You can add more words to it, ones you commonly spell incorrectly, so that they will automatically correct. There are some mistakes that can't be anticipated, but Word will mark them as errors. You can then correct them quickly. You can also use the spell checker to correct them, even if this is after you've finished typing.
