Click and drag the program you wish to make an icon for from your start menu to the desktop; then drop it, and it will appear.
Alternatively, you can right click on the program in your start menu. Search the menu that pops up for the "Send to" option. On the menu that pops up after that, click on "Desktop (create shortcut)", and it should pop up as an icon on your desktop.
You could also right click the program in your start menu; click "Copy"; go to your desktop; right click, and hit "Paste".

∙ 14y agoIf you want to delete them right click them and then click delete.
If you want to simply hide them you can right click on the desktop and then go to view and uncheck "view desktop icons".

∙ 14y agoIt depends on what 'icons' you want to get back.
If they are the dock icons, then they are either hiding or you have removed them. If they have been removed, got to the Applications folder and just drag them back into the dock. If the entire dock along with the icons is just hiding, then use the keyboard shortcut Command (the Apple key) + D.

∙ 13y agoIf you get rid of an ICON you get rid of the FOLDER!
The Icon is just a pretty looking PATH to the actual folder. So everything that is in that folder is gone also. If you click on the Icon and an empty folder opens or there's nothing in it you need anymore you can trash it. Be absolutely sure you don't need them tho.
You can change the LOOK of an icon.
On a Mac, find a folder icon you like then, right click the icon, select "Get Info" then click once on the "little" icon in the upper part of the window. It should have a narrow shadow around it to show it's been selected, then go to the upper menu and select Edit/Copy then go to the folder you want to change and do the same and just choose Paste at the end.
There are a lot of free icons you can download off the Web.They are just basically empty folders with pretty icons on them.

Not necessarely. You have to stop icons in the startup. That is the bar of icons in the bottom right corner. Then if you delete the icon, that doesnt delete the files, you will have to uninstall it from your computer by using my computer. ( i cant spell sorry)
