Various software packages allow creation and modification of building features (walls, doors, windows, Plumbing fixtures, etc) by clicking a computer mouse instead of using pencils and erasers.

Although not an architect, I have used several different software systems to design kitchens, bathrooms, and entire houses for myself as well as family members.

Basically, computer technology has made architectural work so easy that you don't need to be an architect to do it.

i started life as an architectural draftsman in the late sixties, the old fashioned way with board and t-square and dip pens for inking - i can state without any hesitation that life is much better with computers - no more ruined drawings because ink accidently flowed under a triangle or t-square - no more tedious dimensioning - but even better building models can be made almost entirely by computer controlled machines

as an addendum to the above answer, computer software does not replace archetects and such - yes it is possible to design a home yourself but unless you are knowledgable in all aspects of home construction you will end up costing yourself 10's of thousands of dollars in unneccessary construction costs - anything bigger than a home requires years of study and experience in the strenght of materials and such to keep catastrophic failures from occurring
