I would contend that it is still being used for its original purpose, but for a great deal more than originally imagined. What has evolved into the internet (now an officially capitalized word!) was originally designed as a way of providing multiple routes for data to be exchanged in the United States in case of an attack or disaster. The creation of HTML and graphic rich environments made it easy to use for everyone and it has been expanded throughout the world. Not just data, but messages, pictures, video, sound and even telephone calls can be sent anywhere in the world, through many different routes.
