Without DNS you would be typing

http://74.125.77.104 instead of www.Google.com

http://208.117.236.73 instead of www.YouTube.com

DNS was only designed to make life easier for us humans. Also if you paste those ip addresses into your address bar they will take you to the site.

TCP/IP isn't the only protocol we use on the internet. However there have being a few competitors to TCP but from what I can remember because they weren't free they weren't successful. TCP is free and it works. There is nothing stopping you (or anybody) from making a new set of protocols.

What file is used to translate host name to IP addresses?

Not a file, a DNS server. From Wikipedia:The Domain Name System (DNS) is a hierarchical decentralized naming system for computers, services, or other resources connected to the Internet or a private network. It associates various information with domain names assigned to each of the participating entities. Most prominently, it translates more readily memorized domain names to the numerical IP addresses needed for locating and identifying computer services and devices with the underlying network protocols. By providing a worldwide, distributed directory service, the Domain Name System is an essential component of the functionality on the Internet, that has been in use since 1985.

Do computers need a DNS if they dont need to connect to the internet?

You generally don't require a DNS configuration if you are not going to browse the internet..A DNS is essential only if you want to browse websites using their domain name.In this case, you are not using internet, hence may not require DNS configuration.Advanced info:-However, even if no DNS is specified, OS such as windows always has built in DNS resolution of the loopback IP 127.0.0.1 resolved to "localhost" by default and hence this may only be needed for intranet purposes

Network Error dns server failure in Firefox?

The "DNS server failure" error in Firefox usually occurs when the web browser is unable to establish a connection to the DNS server to resolve domain names. Here are some possible solutions: Check your internet connection: Make sure your internet connection is working correctly by trying to access other websites. If you're not able to access any websites, then the problem is with your internet connection. Clear the DNS cache: Sometimes, the DNS cache can become corrupted, leading to this error. To clear the DNS cache, open the command prompt and type "ipconfig /flushdns". This will flush the DNS cache. Try a different DNS server: You can try using a different DNS server, such as Google DNS (8.8.8.8) or OpenDNS (208.67.222.222). To change your DNS server, go to your network settings and change the DNS server address. Disable DNS prefetching: DNS prefetching is a feature in Firefox that can sometimes cause the "DNS server failure" error. To disable DNS prefetching, open Firefox and go to "about:config". Search for "network.dns.disablePrefetch" and set it to "true". Restart your modem/router: Sometimes, restarting your modem or router can fix the problem. If none of the above solutions work, you may need to contact your internet service provider (ISP) or IT department for further assistance.
