There could be a number of reasons why your computer beomes unresponsive so there are a few things you can check.
Firstly, if you are running Windows XP or later/similar then you should have at least 1 Gig of RAM in your PC. You can check this by going into your control panel and clicking on 'System'. If you have less than 1 Gig then you should probably purchase more memory and if you don't know what memory to buy then I recommend going here - http://www.crucial.com/. You can then download a program that scans your system and tells you what memory you need.
Secondly, if your computer constantly crashes or produces error messages it's possible that you could have errors in your computers registry. The registry contains settings for all programs installed on your PC. If the registry is not kept tidy, the registry can become unstable and cause crashes/error messages or just slow your system down. To check if your computer has registry problems go here - http://the-registry-repair-software-review.com
Thirdly, scan for any viruses or spyware tha could be lurking on your PC. Viruses and Spyware, like other programs use up system resources and if your computer isn't protected then your machine could be at risk. Scan for viruses online here - http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner Use Spybot S&D to scan for spyware, you can download that here - http://www.safer-networking.org/index2.html
Fourth, optimize your hard disk by running disk defragmenter daily. Disk defragmenter packs all the files on your hard drive together so your computer doesn't have a hard time finding files that are scattered all over the drive. To run disk defragmenter, go to 'Start' then 'Run' then type in 'defrag.msc' and hit Enter.
Do all the above and your PC should run a lot faster.
If you are loading a Cd-rom,or a program.
