Its worthwhile, the money is good, its challenging, technology is here to stay and its everywhere. Most people I know who work in IT (myself included) it was just a natural route. If you dont love it, then its probably not for you. Alot of people see that there is alot of money in this career and jump in the bandwagon but after a few months or a year or so jump back out because they cant handle it.
But saying that, IT is a very wide field - there's generally something to suit everybody from website site development for those who want to express themselves artistically, to programming for those who want to work in a team, technicians who like working with their hands, IT instructors for people who want to teach, computer forensics for people who want to work with law enforcement, encryption / decryption for people who love maths, hardware developers for people who want to design the next big thing etc.....
There can be many reason's for choosing IT as your profession. Though remember, dont get a profession you dislike.
Common reasons is the salery and the "fast-get" jobs. IT is the place where there will almost always be people needed. This is for a few reason. I will sum up.
1: When a electronic hardware is made it does not work, until its programmed by IT-people. Electronic hardware cannot program it self. And somebody got to maintain it as well, it wont be able to maintain it self 100%.
2: Other professions will soon be taken over by machines, as we've seen in the 19s. Such as the car industry got taken over by robots mostly.
And trains who are driven by a robot. Soon airplanes?
These are what people who chose IT-career mostly thinks. .

A career path is like what sort of Job you are going to do. A career ladder is when you start at the bottom of the career chain and work your way up. Example: Bagger, to check-out, to PIC (person in charge), to assistant manager, etc.
