Use this option when the video setting does not allow you to see the screen well enough to fix a bad setting. This can happen when a user creates a desktop with black fonts on a black background, or something similar.

∙ 15y agoTypically when you are unable to view the display after booting the OS. Sometimes this may happen when you have changed monitors. For example, you had a nice LCD monitor that displayed at a high resolution, but it broke and now you have replaced it with an older one that cannot display such a high resolution. Also, maybe you forgot to change your refresh rate down below 70hz when you upgraded to your new LCD from your old CRT monitor.

∙ 15y agoWhen an incorrect video setting causes you to be unable to run Windows normally such as selecting a refresh rate or resolution that is not supported by your monitor. VGA mode will load your normal drivers at a resolution of 640x480.
