MIPS is short for Million Instructions Per Second. It is a speedrating of a computer. An old 1 Mhz PC had a mips rating of approx 1. The processor could deal with 1 million instructions every second. Nowadays todays computers runs at far greater speeds. 3 GigHz is not uncommon. Following the old 1Mhz machine, this new computer should be able to do 3000 MIPS, but this is as of today not any more correct. The processors can be dual or even quadruple which will double or quadruble the MIPS. Furthermore the processors are more advanced so that they can do several instructions during one clock cycle. One 3 GigHz processor can easily do between 12 and 20 thousand MIPS today. and the speed is still increasing.
