An IP address is like a phone number - a unique address to allow one computer to communicate with another over a network. Your IP address may be static (permanently assigned) or dynamic (issued for a period of time called a lease, and returned to a 'pool' of addresses after the lease expires, to be issued out again later). This address can be used on a private network (intranet) at a company's offices, or a public network (the internet). Either way, it is how computers communicate with one another. It's like placing a phone call. You have to know who you are calling first.
