ROM stands for Read Only Memory. there are different types of ROM, such as EPROM(Eraseable Programable Read Only Memory) and EEPROM(Electronically Erasable Programable Read Only Memory) ROM does not require an electrical charge to keep data. RAM on the other hand loses its data when the power is cut. RAM stands for random access memory, which refers to the way in which data is read. There are some peices of equipment which use RAM to store data, keeping the RAM powered by a battery.

ROM = Read Only Memory RAM = Random Access Memory
ROM can be a pre-recorded CD or DVD (you can only read from it you cannot write to it)
RAM is solid-state memory on the computer's motherboard which serves as primary memory and loads the operating system files in use and lots of other stuff. Any bit of RAM can be "read" at any time (Random Access) so you do not have to read all the memory to get to a certain address.
