PDF stands for Portable Document Format. The PDF was an attempt by Adobe to make a "standard" document format that could be read by all computers. The idea was sound but caused confusion, as you needed Adobe's software and plugins to even just look at the file.

The PDF is still widely used today, especially on the internet and since Word 2007 went on sale, as it now includes an "Export as PDF" option.

When I rename a pdf document I get this message If you change the file name the file may become unusable?

It's simply telling you that any programs that use that particular file will no longer be able to find it. Changing the file name is usually harmless, but changing the file extension (.pdf) will mean that your PDF reader won't load the file when you double click it. Generally you should leave file extensions unchanged since it gives a hint to the operating system which type of file it is.

How do you convert a pdf file into a doc file using VB code?

You will need a PDF server running somewhere that can be accessed by your VB code. It will need to be called from the code through the server and get the PDF file in return. I did that with Tweak PDF Converter, an pdf editor for converting pdf file to word form.

Can an exe file hide in a pdf file?

Technically no, but by default windows hides the file extensions that are known by the computer. A file that may really be an exe could be file.pdf.exe, so the ".exe" will be hidden, tricking you into believing that it is a pdf.
