Why are compact disc have a round shape?

CD; Compact Disc obviously, have disc shape. The most relevant answer to this question is that DISC format can store move information in other words we can have larger volume of data in this format rather that going with square or any other shape. We can definitely have any desired shape; some learned fellow suggests that rectangular shape ( http:/en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shaped_CD) can cause problem or lens cannot read Squared shape but even they cant ignore that we had Circular tracks even before we had Magnetic tape concept; Gramophone's .....( http:/simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gramophone_record ) One can ask for a mathematical proof of above claim and can suggest that Volume of circle is lesser than that of Square; perfectly fine but Circle doesn't have any volume. No. A hundred years ago was 1913 and no they didn't. The car had just been put into production, the airplane invented in 1903, the telephone was still fairly new, and there were still people without electricity. The first TV was made in 1924, but not sold until 1947. People used radios for news, music, and entertainment all through the 1930's and 40's. The first computer was a government computer in 1947 that filled a room with the machinery it took to run it. It used magnetic tape for memory and key punch cards.The silcone chip hadn't been invented yet. There was no Internet (1971 when it was invented by two MIT grad students) and desk top computers weren't sold until the late 1970's. The Apple 2E was an early home computer with 6g memory. The cell phone was invented by Dr. Martin Cooper of Motorola in 1974 and sold for government use. It wasn't until 1984 that they were sold to public. In 1913 the phonograph was a gramophone. There were no CD's, no tape, no recording devices, and no DVD's. Movies were silent and not in color. The first movie with sound was in 1928 and it was called the Great Train Robbery. The first color movie was in 1932 and that was the Wizard of OZ and to have color in it they had to hand color the film. No, in 1913 the world was a different place than it is today.

However, with a CD the laser starts reading the disc from the inside ring (table of contents) and ends up on the outside. When play back starts, a laser beam shines on the ridges and lands on the data membrane layer. If you look at the image on the right you can see the data layer moving in gray.During playback, the number of revolutions of the disc decreases from 500 to 200 rpm (revolutions per minute) to maintain a constant scanning speed. The disc data is converted into electrical pulses (the bit stream) by reflections of the laser beam from a photoelectric cell.When the laser beam strikes "land", the beam is reflected onto a photoelectric cell. When it strikes a "ridge", the photocell will receive only a weak reflection. Thus the photoelectrical cell receives series of light pulses corresponding to the ridges and lands in the disc. These light pulses are the foundation of binary 'digital' data. A simple substitution for the weak signal "0" and the in-focus signal "1" results in a pure digital playback without alteration, every time, without failure or degradation.In music playback, a D/A-Converter (digital to analogue converter; DAC) converts the series of pulses (binary coding) from a decimal code to a waveform, which can then be processed for amplification. The longer the decimal code, the better the sound. Current standard CD audio is 44,100 pulses per second and 16 bit (decimal places) in digital word length. Thus a 24 bit system sounds all that much better, in fact DVD audio is set to allow 24 bit AND pulse at 97,000 times per second!
