On power-up, the computer is designed to jump through the address found at memory location zero to find its first instruction (indirect addressing). BIOS occupies memory location zero with the proper instruction address to start running the BIOS routines, which scans for hardware attached to the PC and loads drivers for the found hardware. It then loads the boot module from the operating system and turns control over to that.
