Very simply, a network interface card is a computer component that will slot into a socket on a PC motherboard with the back of the card providing one or more Ethernet connection sockets. The card is required to connect a PC to the internet via a wired connection. The card has a hard wired MAC address identifies the device uniquely on the network.
Modern PCs can also connect to the internet wirelessly via a PC bus card or a USB device connection - these devices could also be called network interface cards.
