∙ 13y agoSome brands I'd personally recommend are Dell, Gateway, Asus along with maybe Toshiba and Sony. Dell and gateway have the highest rated customer support according to Consumer Reports Magazine.
Some notes:
1) Asus' is a highly rated/decorated company for quality, design & value. Not to mention they manufacture a significant portion of hardware supplied to most other brands.
2) Toshiba's are decent, but tend to be bulkier & heavier, but more durable.
3) Acer/Gateway/Emachines (same company) are very affordable but tend to have higher hardware failure rates. Good for entry level to last maybe a year or two max.
4) Sony's are nice computers & have great design elements & performance, but tend to be more pricey.
5) Dell & HP are about equal and are average priced & are for average users.
Or you could buy an Apple laptop which is a bit more user friendly and has far better customer support but is significantly more expensive for a similar model from another manufacturer. Also with an Apple, there are few to no games for it. Either way they both get viruses.

∙ 12y agoYou can determine what is best for you by considering what you'd like your notebook to contain. Such as, how big of a hard drive or capabilities such as built in webcam or mic. Then set a price range of what you're willing to pay for those qualities then shop to you find something that fits you. Local stores who sell laptops can help you compare what each notebook will allow you to do.
