The PSU's main job is to break down the amount of electricity and distribute it to different parts of the board. The parts are to delicate to handle the huge amounts of electricity that comes directly from the socket on the wall. Aswell as this, the electric comming from the wall is AC and the PSU converts this to DC. And importantly it helps with spikes and brown outs in the supply from the wall.
