Higher power usage and higher temperatures can happen if a CPU is running at a high speed all of the time. High temperatures can cause a CPU to overheat which can destroy the CPU or the hardware it's attached to. Computer users can deliberately 'overclock' their machines (make it run faster than its specified processor voltage/frequency) but run the risk of overheating their processors, which will often cause their computers to shut down, or in the worst cases can destroy their CPUs. Fortunately most computing devices are designed to run for hours at a time at full loads without overheating, and since overclocking is something that must be done deliberately, there is little risk of your computer taking any damage unless you overclock it manually. (people who overclock their machines typically buy good fans or a liquid cooling system to cool their processors better so they can run their machines faster with less of a risk of it overheating).
