Technology plays a very Important role in the success of supply chain management. Supply Chain works best in conjunction with ERP( Enterprise Resource Program). ERP system involves a multitude of business activities which includes customer service and also production planning that are not a part of the supply chain. However the supply chain does not organize a lot information supply chains are used to run efficiently and without this system most companies run into problems. Even though the supply-chain pre-dates the internet, only through the use of web-based and communication and truly reach it's potential. Before the internet, companies were not able to send or receive data or to sent updates, feedback or any other information in a timely fashion. Moreover, companies were limited to their ability to work with other international partners due to the language barriers and also due to time differences. Using the internet to handle most of the information which includes attaining and communication makes the exchange of data and supply chain faster. One of the biggest advantage that technology has given to supply chain concept is the ability for companies to collaborate. These are designed for the benefit of both the companies. For example : a supplier of goods can be linked with one of the distributors so that if the supply gets low an order can be issued for more goods. In this way the distributor nor the supplier have to worry about the products. In this way of collaboration, it makes it a better usage of the exisiting resources and paves for larger profit on all sides.
Supply chain includes all of the internal functions of an organization, along with suppliers, distributors, retailers and customers. They are all intertwined and rely on information from each other to effectively meet the business's objectives. Information is the glue that holds the supply chain together. Lack of or faulty information can wreak havoc on the entire chain from getting supplies into the manufacturing process and getting the final product to the customer. In a perfect world, just-in-time strategies for ordering and delivering supplies would be an ordinary process. Unfortunately, we don't live in a perfect world. Because of the physical reasons including natural disasters, dock worker strikes, and terrorist activities such as September 11, 2001, can disrupt even the most carefully planned supply chains in an instant.
