Advantages of owning a Personal Computer:

  • Word processing and document creation is quick and easy
  • You don't have to store so much paperwork (means more drawers full of old matchboxes & light bulbs!)
  • Quick reference via the internet to almost any topic imaginable
  • Online encyclopedias and question / answer groups like this one
  • Games... good distraction from real life when you need it, and cheaper than a holiday!
  • Easy storage for photographs, video and music
  • Infinitely reproduceable... you can back up a computer a thousand times if you want to, so nothing you do has to be irrecoverable.
  • Anything you create can be deleted or modified at any time
  • Almost all machines have upgradeable components and software.

Disadvantages of owning a Personal Computer:

  • Its easy to forget the time and spend far too long in front of it, especially playing games or looking up interesting things on the internet.
  • You might loose friends / grip on reality / sanity, etc in the case of too much of the above!
  • Some machines can be expensive to purchase
  • Laptop machines in particular are easily dropped / damaged
  • Never-ending yearly licence agreements for anti-virus software (if you use the internet)
  • You will never stop buying gadgets to plug into it... cameras, microphones, headsets, joysticks, mouse(es), keyboards, printers & ink cartridges, scanners, card readers, DVD re-re-re-rewriteable drives, U.S.B Flash drives, graphics slates & stilos, mobile phones, ipods, mp3 players, palm-tops, GPS devices, servers, routers, monitors, wireless dongles.........you get the picture!

There is really very little to be said for the disadvantages of owning a P.C. You might use a little bit more electricity than you do already, but that's about it. There are people who hate computers but who still find time to play at least one game of patience on them a day!
