It all depends on your hardware... either could easily be faster if it has better hardware. That said, a desktop will generally be able to better handle good hardware. The main things you want to look at in the specs are the processor and the RAM.
Desktops are usually more powerful than a similar priced laptop. High end laptops can beat low-mid range desktops but will cost far more. However, the best desktop will beat the best laptop any day
A laptop is also just another computer, so it really depends on what hardware is used in either one to really tell. neither one per deffinition is faster.
Generally laptops are not as fast as desktop computers, because they are designed for low power and not fast speeds, but there is a large amount of overlap.
Laptop or Notebook?
I am not in favor of the name "Laptop" but that is the name nevertheless. These machines are designed with their cooling fans at the bottom - so keeping it on your Lap, causes poor air circulation. This can cause the processor to overheat, causing extensive and expensive damage to the machine. I recommended using cooling pads underneath these type of machines.....so keep the machine off your Lap.
Back to the question - Any computer is only as powerful as it's internal hardware. Hard drive size, Processor speed, Amount of Ram...to name just a few. Don't be fooled by the size of the casing or shape of the machine. When purchasing a Notebook or laptop, go for a popular brand that has a backup service center. More importantly,check/ read the specifications of the machine. I will advise you to do some research on what brands are out there and ask a PC Tech for advice. The Web has a world of information on different machines and their technical specifications.
desktop generally. laptops use smaller components in very small space.
desktops are able to utilize the space for cooling and using higher performance pieces
Both systems could be built to operate at the same speeds; however the power draws, and operating temps make the lap top unstable and possibly unsafe.
No a laptop computer cannot be as fast as a desktop. Coz Size Always matters.
The laptop can only get the first place for mobility but for perfrormance a Desktop should be used.
It depends on the actual system specifications, but desktops are always upgradable when laptops are normally not.

A netbook is a version of a laptop computer. It is smaller than a notebook, sometimes called a regular laptop and is generally less powerful and less expensive.
Notebook computers are becoming more popular as the development in technology has allowed for the power of a desktop computer, to be compacted into a smaller body. This is more convenient and, while being more expensive, and slightly less powerful than a desktop computer, these are great for getting tasks done on the go.
