The OSI model has seven layers whereby each layer has its function. The Data Link Layer is responsible for addressing data messages so that they reach their destination correctly.

Switches are on the second layer of the OSI model (Data Link); they do filtering based on host MAC addresses. You may also see a third layer switch; they not only provide all switching capabilities but some layer three routing capabilities too.
Layer 2 - The Data Link Layer Layer 2 of the OSI model provides error-detection capability

Physical Layer of OSI model
Layer 2 data link layer
The layer of the OSI model that addresses how data between applications is synced and recovered if messages don't arrive intact is the Transport layer (Layer 4). This layer is responsible for ensuring reliable data transfer, including error detection, correction, and flow control. Protocols like TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) operate at this layer, providing mechanisms for data integrity and retransmission of lost packets.
The OSI layer that handles IP addresses is the Network layer, which is the third layer of the OSI model. This layer is responsible for routing packets across different networks and managing logical addressing, such as IP addresses, to ensure that data can be sent and received between devices on different networks. Additionally, it facilitates the selection of optimal paths for data transmission.
Data link layer
Layer 2 (Data Link Layer) http://compnetworking.about.com/cs/internetworking/g/bldef_bridge.htm
The OSI layer responsible for converting bits into signals for outgoing messages and signals into bits for incoming messages is the Physical layer. This layer handles the transmission and reception of raw bitstreams over a physical medium, such as cables or wireless signals. It defines the electrical, mechanical, and procedural specifications for transmitting data.
