Computers use the binary system as instructions for the computer's processor.

This is a way of representing text for the computer.

The binary system contains only two values: zero and one. Electronic systems have been designed so that a signal being "off" means zero and a signal being "on" means one. There are three basic binary functions in electronics: invert, difference and shift. All computing is accomplished by various combinations of these functions.

For example, the number 5 in binary is 0101 (one plus four). To multiply by two you would simply shift left to get 1010 (eight plus two).

Digital computers are just a series of on/off switches. On =1, off =0. Computer logic can turn a switch on, off, or check to see if a switch is on or off.

Since there are only 2 possible positions for an on/off switch, binary is all you get. Everything else is program.

Computers use the binary system because of the following things:

1- The concept of on/off is equivalent to 1 and 0, the two digits in the binary number system. This is understandable to computers and electronic circuits.

2- It will cost a lot to create a computer that can run on any other number system.

Because there is no other way! computers use "transistors" which have 2 settings: open and closed, or 1 and zero, just like a switch to make calculations.
