Using computers to create simulations of physical processes is a cost effective was of finding out what will work the best for a given process. If the same was to be done in real world it will require a lot of time, money and organizing, with computers one can check multiple scenarios and come out with the one that will work the best for real world. One of the best examples of software's used to simulate real world process is ProcessModel it comes with a free evaluation period.
