The reason behind the qwerty keyboard is mechanical. When the first typewriters were produced, the arms of the letters would bind up if you typed too fast, and the best arrangement that the inventor found was the current one.

The QWERTY layout was made for typewriters.While it is a common misconception that a QWERTY keyboard was designed to slow down typewriters it is designed to prevent typewriters from jamming because when 2 neighboring keys where tapped in rapid succession they would sometimes jam.

and the type bars would come from opposite directions.
