If you can not setup with the auto option try the manual option and make sure that your settings have not been changed. I found a slight improvement in stability by using password protection. don't know why it worked , but it did. They say you can relocate your wireless router to provide a better signal. I just purchased an ethernet cable and ran it from the wireless router to the back of the PS3 and when I checked the connectivity the speeds had increased and I stayed with a wired system since then and have never lost a connection.
