Can you get the text now app on the Kindle Fire?

Yes, you can. I suggest Text+ or Text+ Gold. These apps require internet to recieve messages and send messages. However, these apps say they can call other devices but they cannot.

There are multiple apps on the android market that offers "texting."

Since the Kindle Fire has no GSM radio, it is not actually a "text message", but it is a message of data that goes out. The actual transmission of the data is pulled off of your data plan or wi-fi allowance, so it is "free" because you are paying the data bill whether or not you send the message out.

Some services that do offer the "texting" service do cost. The reasoning is that they actually do send out an actual text message. for those services, when you transmit data from your device, it goes to a computer somewhere which then actually sends it out as a text message.

Each and every app is different though, so you will need to read the description before you download the app
