The easiest way is to view them in the folder storing them, but you wish to check them through an email client like Thunderbird or Outlook you can click on the file once it's attached, open them in paint and check them before sending.
Look at the header before opening them. Scan them before you open them.
This happens when you are sending a file format which is not recognised by gmail . Check the attachments attached to the email
