LAN stands for Local Area Network. It often refers to an internal, usually private, network. LAN is a very broad term.

WAN stands for Wide Area Network. It is often used to describe the internet.

CAN usually stands for Campus Area Network. It is sometimes used to describe a network at a university or other college. It is also sometimes used to describe a corporate network that spans two or more buildings.

MAN stands for a Metropolitan Area Network. It is used to describe a network, usually wireless, that spans several blocks. Often installed by cities who would benefit from having devices constantly connected to their respective servers and companies who strike deals with the city.

HAN stands for a Home Area Network. As the name implies, it is a slightly more definitive type of LAN. Used for describing residential home networks.

CAN, MAN and HAN are not used often. LAN is almost always used to describe a network.
