To forward ports on your router just login to your router's on-line interface. Port Fowarding is used when a program (lets use FileFind [not a real program]) requests a port the router doesn't understand. Lets say that FileFind requests port 130 on your router, but your router doesn't have a port 130. It does, however, have a 128. The port forwarding tells the request to port 130 to be routed through port 128.
You can, you will need port fowarding, as long as your modem supports NAT/PMP or UPnP. On a Mac, it is very easy. Just download Port Map and run it, adding the port "25565". On a Windows Computer, however, you need to manually port forward your network. You need to go to your host IP(Like 192.168.0.1 or 10.10.0.1) and login as admin. Go to the Ports Section and add a Public Port, "25565", and your server is done port forwarding. Last thing is to, of course, find out what is your real IP.
