It's a very good word processor. As well as the usual page and text formatting, there's mail-merge facilities and the option to insert picture or drawings into documents. Additionally, you can save files in different formats so they can be read by other programs.

If you mean can you write something using Microsoft Works word-processor - and open it using OpenOffice - yes you can ! OpenOffice will happily open .wks files.

Generally OpenOffice compares very well. The major issues I have with OO is with "Presenter" (the PowerPoint like module) The animations are not as good or easy to use as in MS PowerPoint. I find the Spreadsheet and the Word processor very good indeed.
