When the compact check count reaches 100 it generates the Compact prompt in Outlook Express. The count increases each time you exit OE. You need to stop it counting.

This is what you do:

1. Click Start Menu (or press Windows key) and select Run.

2. In the Run dialog box, type regedit and click OK (or press Enter).

3. The Registry Editor will open.

4. Scroll to the top of the list on the left and highlight My Computer by single-clicking.

5. Click Edit and select Find (or press Ctrl F). Type compact and

click Find Next (or press Enter).

6. Compact Check Count will appear, highlighted; double-click on it.

7.Change the value data to 0 (zero) and click OK (or press Enter).

8. Exit (Close) the Registry Editor.

That's it. No more annoying prompts.

NOTE: This is a safe procedure. The Registry Editor, though, has very powerful functions and it is essential you don't MIS-KEY or change ANYTHING ELSE AT ALL unless you absolutely, definitely, know what you're doing. So follow the above instructions to the letter and don't play around while you're in there!

NOTE 2: Since contributing this answer I've become aware the Compact Check Count value can revert, causing the prompts to start again. If this happens to you, just reset the count as above and watch this space while I - or another contributor - work on it some more.

Compacting mail: You should compact your messages manually from time to time; they'll still be there, but taking up less space. In OE go to Tools > Options > Maintenance, and click Clean Up Now (or press Alt C). Be sure to remember which folder you send your compacted mail to. For more information on this, go to OE's Help menu.

Hint: It's helpful to create a folder in OE, maybe call it Technical Stuff, or whatever suits you, to keep notes on things like this. Just create a new folder, name it, and when you've new information to add just start a new message with the information reference in the subject line. Type or paste the details in the message body and close (or ESC), saving the message as you exit. The message will go to your Drafts folder; move it from there to your reference folder.

Now you'll always have a quick reference to those things you think you'll remember but never do.

Make as many reference folders as you like, on other subjects, and you'll have quick access to your notes whenever and wherever you open Outlook or Outlook Express. Of course, you can do the same with other email browsers.
