You can return to search companion witha simple registry change but there are pre-requisites. 1. You have to be logged in as a user with admin rights. Since the change is in HKEY_ LOCAL_USER it only applies to the logged in user at the time. 2 You have to open WIndows Desktop Search and click on use Search Companion at the bottom of the left pane for the entry to appear in the registry to begin with. Once these are met you go to [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Desktop Search\DS] and set the key "ShowStartSearchBand" to 0. The user's profile will bypass WDS.
