In a windows computer the start button is the button in the far left bottom corner of your main screen or desktop, in older versions of windows it had start written in it now with vista you will see an "orb" (a round button with the windows symbol in it) which says "start" when you hover over it.
Assuming you mean the "Show Desktop" button, you right click the start back and click "Properties" then check "Show Quick Launch".
A desktop theme can be changed on Vista by clicking on the Start button, Control Panel, Appearance and Personalization, Personalization and then clicking on Desktop Background. On the Desktop Background page you can choose a picture for your desktop background.
You can make a shortcut for it so it's on your desktop
Go to the recycling bin. And find "desktop" click it and hit "restore". And it then hit the start button. In the search bar type in "desktop". If that does not work I am sorry. But I am sure it will work.

My Computer is inside the start menu, on the right side of the start menu is the button, "Computer" It's the same as My Computer, if you want it on the desktop, right click on the button and choose, "Show on Desktop" This will work for some of the other buttons too, if not, simply drag it onto the desktop, it will create a shortcut. None of this will work if you are using the "classic" start menu, to switch to the normal start menu right click on the taskbar and go to properties, then go to the start menu tab and choose start menu, instead of classic start menu. But you are probably using the normal start menu anyways
