If you were unlucky enough to have a flash drive in 1987, you wouldn't have had a USB port to plug it into. So the biggest change was the introduction of USB.
The smallest USB flash drive that is easily found nowadays is a 2gb. It is possible to find smaller, but difficult. The largest memory on the normal market is a 1TB flash drive.

A flash memory card is a card that holds digital data. An example of a flash memory card would be an SD Card, Micro SD, Memory Stick Pro Duo, Flash Drive (Thumb Drive, USB key). All Ipod models except the ipod classic use flash memory. Flash memory has no moving parts, but, hardrives do. Those are classified under, non-flash memory. Flash memory cards have different memory capacities. The higher the capacity, the more expensive it will be. But, the higher capacity, the more stuff can be put on it. Hope this helps
Yes. Hard drives can go up to almost 3 Terabytes currently, while USB flash drives only go up to about 64 Gigabytes. However, USB flash drives may have more storage capacity than older hard drive models.
You can't. A 1 GB Flash Drive will only have a capacity around 1 GB. Short of modifying the actual hardware, your 1 GB flash drive will always be just that; a 1 GB flash drive.
a flash drive or pen drive, or possibly a USB key
