Do you need a USB PCMCIA and a USB 2.0 hub if you want to connect an external hard drive to a laptop?

If one's laptop already has a USB port, a USB 2.0 PCMCIA card and hub are not necessary, as all USB devices can work in any USB port albeit sometimes at a lower speed . However, for maximum speed, if USB 2.0 is not available on the laptop, the USB 2.0 PCMCIA Card can be installed. All you need is a hub and that's assuming that you don't have a spare USB port on your system. If all your USB ports are used, simply attach 1 or more items to the new hub and attach the hub to the resultant free port. I recommend that you choose a hub with 4 or more ports - to allow for future upgrades or additions. Hope this helps. Canis I would recommend a powered hub if you are connecting to a laptop. The buss voltage drops off with multiple items plugged into a laptop.

How do you turn a usb 1.0 to 2.0 on laptop?

This is not possible. The speed of the USB controller is based on its complex chipset, which cannot be feasibly replaced. If you want USB 2.0 ports on your laptop, you will need to purchase a PC Card with a USB hub.

How many usb port on dell vostro 1014?

There is no minimum or required number for USB ports on a laptop. Depending on the age and design of the laptop, it could be anywhere from zero to ten. I have seen only 2 USB ports on older laptops, most of the new ones atleast have 4 USB ports. Netbooks(10" & 11") have not more than 2 USB ports. If in anycase you need more USB ports, you could buy an USB hub for as less as 10$, which will add 4 more ports to your laptop.
