First thing to check - are you actually connected to their LAN? It's not much use triyng to connect to a LAN game if you aren't.

To make a world a LAN world click Ecs. On that screen, there is a "Open To LAN" button. Click it. You will get to choose what game mode, and if you want cheats. Click "Start LAN world". Done. The person who created the LAN world must be on to have other players on it. To go onto to a LAN world, Click multiplayer. It will scan for LAN worlds.
