Go to the "open" menu, select the document you want to delete, and press the delete button on your keyboard instead of "OK." It will ask you if you are sure. Tell it yes.
If you are in Windows, you can also do this by going to the Word save folder (the default is My Documents), in Windows Explorer, and deleting it from there.
