To get the Google Play Store on a Nook HD without rooting, you can sideload the Google Play Store APK files. First, enable "Unknown Sources" in the device settings to allow installation of apps from outside the Nook Store. Then, download the necessary APK files for the Google Play Store and Google Services from a trusted source, transferring them to your device. Install these APKs in the correct order, starting with Google Services followed by the Play Store, and you should be able to access the Google Play Store on your Nook HD.
You can find free Nook apps on the Barnes & Noble website or in the Nook app store on your Nook device. Simply search for "free apps" in the app store to browse and download a variety of free apps available for your Nook.

For the original Nook tablet, it doesn't allow for the Google Play app to be installed. To do so would require "rooting" the device, which is essentially unlocking and giving access to modify the tablet any way you wish. The Nook HD and HD+ allowed for Google Play to be installed on May 2013.
