It would completely depend on how far you want to go to increase the speed of the computer. Speed can be increased by upgrading hardware, or performing routine maintanence :

Note: The following steps are geared towards a computer running Windows, not a Mac.

If you want to go as far as upgrading hardware, speed is commonly increased by the following

Upgrading RAM: RAM (Random Access Memory) simply determines how many things your computer can do at one time. This will be what you will want to upgrade if you do a lot of multi tasking on your computer.

Upgrading Processor: This is where the general speed of your computer comes from. This more contorls how fast it will do the things you request, rather than how much it does at one time.

Note: if you are unfamiliar with computer hardware, your best bet for this is to take it to a local computer store/repair place to have it upgrading. While you will pay more for this, then you don't have to worry about incompatable hardware, or any of the numerous issues that can come up during a hardware installation. If possible check several places for the best rate, but also look for things like post install maintenance. Most of the more reputable computer stores will also offer a 10-30 day post install warranty, where if anything goes wrong, and it was a result of the install, they will fix it free, or for very little cost.

There is other things that you can do yourself, just dealing with software, that can greatly increase the speed of your computer:

Defragment your Harddrive: Particularly if you do a lot of uninstalling/installing of software on your computer, you will want to do this regularly. I do mine no less than once a month. Essentially, when you first get your commputer, it is already "defragmented'. When you remove your first program from the computer, you leave a "hole" where that program was. When you install your next program, it will fill that hole, and put the rest of the program elsewhere. Now, your computer has to look at two different areas when it wants to access that program (hence the slowness). When you defragment your harddrive, you basically are telling your computer to pull all of the programs in order.

Run an Anti-Spyware Program: Particularly if you surf the internet quite a bit. While it isn't the technical term for what it does, spyware is software that slows down your computer. You get spyware, by browsing the internet.

There are several programs out there to assist with spyware. The best bet, to go to any search engine, and type in "free anti spyware". Then do some research within the search results. Don't be afraid of using free programs. I currently right now run 3 free anitspyware programs, and 2 free anti virus scans. I haven't used one of the major ones you pay for for years, and I have never had a problem.
