Cut and paste all of the content into another document, re-format, and don't protect it. I had already tried that, but it didn't work as I couldn't select any of the text. I eventually solved the problem by opening a new document and using "Insert, File".
Pull the hard drive and hook it to another computer. Then use the standard methods of recovery.
