The 'child lock' you are looking for is called 'restrictions'. You must have software 2.0 or later.
To set up restrictions....
- Go to Settings.
- Go to General.
- Go to Restrictions.
- At the top, tap enable restrictions.
- Enter a passcode (4 digits).
- Set restrictions for 'Installing Apps'.
- Then save your restrictions.
